The University Games, the international student sports competition, is second in importance only to the Olympic Games. The program includes thirteen Olympic sports: basketball, water polo, volleyball, judo, track and field athletics, table tennis, swimming, diving, sport and rhythmic gymnastics, tennis, fencing, football and plus three more competitions based on the choice of the authorities of the venue of the University Games.
The University Games differ from the Olympic Games, first of all, because participants of the University Games are students from 17 to 28 years of age, and the World University Games are held every two years, consisting of the Winter and Summer University Games.
In Russia, the University Games, since their inception in 1923, have been held only once, in the summer of 1973, in Moscow.
The capital of Tatarstan was chosen for the University Games of 2013 in June of 2008, by a vote of the International Federation of Student Sports (Р181Т) in Brussels.
The University Games played in Kazan from July 6th to17th, 2013. More than 50,000 athletes and guests from 170 countries attended.
